因为蜡烛在燃烧过程中融化的蜡,遇到水会迅速变成固体,并冻结在火焰四周,隔离火焰与水的接触。火焰低于水面后,水会把散向蜡筒的热量迅速带走,因此蜡筒就能保护火苗一直燃烧。在氧气和蜡烛充足的条件下,火焰一般不会熄灭。
